Simply Satisfying

No need for elaborate fixins...just plain and simple yum!
Less cooking, less clean-up, but no less satisfying :-)
Woke up @ 6:00, fixed lunch before leaving to help on church bus-route @ 8:30,
home from church @ 1:00, took pics, enjoyed lunch, played Fast Scrabble!
A sweetly relaxing day! So blessed.

Creamed Chicken Casserole:
Boil 3 lbs. boneless skinless chicken breast till tender.
Remove from liquid and coarsely chop meat.
To make the cream sauce, melt 1/2 stick butter in pan, add appx. 2/3 c. flour,
whisking together to prevent any lumps.
Turn off heat, and gradually add chicken broth (appx. 3 cups) to make a sauce.
Add 1 tsp. Wyler's Chicken granules + 1 tsp. coarsely ground black pepper to season,
then add 1 c. sour cream, whisking all together.
Add chopped chicken + 2 c. cheddar cheese; combine all and pour into casserole dish.
Combine 1 sleeve crushed Ritz crackers w/ 1/4 c. melted butter; sprinkle over casserole. Bake @ 375 for appx. 40 minutes or till bubbly.

How to play Fast Scrabble:
You will not need the Scrabble board for this game.
Dump scrabble tiles on table & turn them face-down.  Each player draws 7 tiles to start.
One player says "go!" and all players start building their own crossword puzzle.
When one player uses all tiles to make valid words, that player says "take one!".
Then all players must draw a tile and continue making their puzzle.
Players may reconstruct their puzzle at any time during the game.
When all tiles are gone, the first one to finish their puzzle with valid words says "stop!".
Then each player counts their word points horizontally and records the score.
Now count vertically and record that score. Deduct any points for left-over tiles.
The person who said "stop!" gets to double the score of their most valuable word.

Each Little Flower

All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful:
The Lord God made them all.
Each little flower that opens,
Each little bird that sings,
He made their glowing colors,
He made their tiny wings.

Youch to Yum

Youch!!! Do you see those awful-lookin' thorns?

But do you see those buds that will become sweet white blooms?
Well, that's where the luscious blackberries will grow in a few weeks.
And thorns will not keep the birds or the babies out of them!
Nor will they prevent me from nibbling either...
And maybe there will be enough berries for a cobbler this year.
Oh yum!

I Spy

From my kitchen window
I spied a couple of Mockingbirds
frequently flying in and out of our Camelia bush.
Today I checked, and as I suspected, there is a cozy little nest!

And just look at the black trash bag woven through it,
and the nylon string, and some kind of blue plastic to the left.
It must have been quite an interesting effort for them
to transport these things to the "building site".

Old-Time Treats

Just rolled out pie crust, sprinkled w/ sugar and cinnamon. Baked till done!

Flower Garden

I'm making a garden; I'll plant it with care,

Here are the seeds I'll plant in there,

The sun will shine; The rain will fall,

The seeds will sprout and grow up tall.

Little Ones

Two little feet, ten little toes,

Leave their impressions today.

Soon they will wear two little shoes,

And be running and jumping at play.

My little ones are all grown now
and I sure miss them being near.

Enjoying keeping a cuddly 6 wk. old.

So many things I can relate to in this Mary Engelbreit illustration.

The intrigue of the great outdoors,
the constant desire to learn more about it,
the research and documentation of my findings,
the excitement of building upon what I already know,
and the realization that there is always more adventure awaiting!

I love quilts
because they are beautiful,
because they warm the home with cheerful colors,
because they are comfy to snuggle up in or to sleep under,
because somebody invested alot of time and effort to produce them,
because they are individual...there are virtually no two alike.

Who remembers having an Autograph Book?

Friends from school and church, some relatives, and even a few
local "celebrities" penned their name and sentiments in these pages.
Uncovered again today, it was so nice to reminisce these many years later!

I planned to rise early this morning and water the garden,
But woke to the sound of rain on my windowpanes.
Another reminder of God's provision, and I'm thankful.

Dirt, Shovel, Clippers

and the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to spring forth...

Folding Fans

Seems long ago and far away... before we had air-conditioning installed,
these were kept in the pew racks at our small country church when I was growing up.

Thankful for family.
Thankful for good times.
Thankful for captured memories.
Thankful for time spent in scrapbooking.

Simple pleasures are sweetest, more cherished and dear,
And little things sometimes bring former times near.

Just a yellowed old photo, or small souvenier
Bring reflections of yesterday with maybe a tear.

Of times spent together with families and friends,
No wealth can compare to the joy memory lends.

And though riches are scarce and life may be hard,
You'll always be glad for the memories acquired.

"Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings,
and not one of them is forgotten before God?
But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows."

Luke 12:6-7 (KJV)

Stained, But Salvaged

Today I found these quilt blocks folded in with some other quilt tops.
They are very worn, stained, and fragile. Some of the corners are gone.
I don't know the story behind these...don't remember how I came to possess them.
But it appears that the fabric was already worn and stained before the blocks were pieced.
Maybe from worn-out clothing?  Several strips were made up of smaller bits of fabric.
I wasn't sure about piecing the blocks together in seams, as the fabric was so weak.
Yet, I didn't want to toss them out after somebody had gone to all that work,
even to planning and putting the crimson in the center of each block.
So I zig-zagged them onto a lining, and am considering using it as a wall-hanging.
I'm pleased with the result...glad I salvaged it, though my work was so very basic.
It serves to remind me that somebody took the little they had,
had a vision to make it useful and attractive, and worked very diligently toward that goal.
And now these many years later, I have cherished their work which brightened my day.

Simply Refreshing

This punch recipe was introduced to me just yesterday, and well worth sharing!
So easy!! So good!!! Just two ingredients!

Chill Sprite in freezer for 1 1/2 - 2 hours before serving...just till slushy cold.
Add lime sherbet. Garnish w/ slices of fresh lime if desired. Enjoy!

Captured Colors

I love capturing my flowers at night :-)
The dark background really makes the colors stand out!

We awaken to the sounds of a flock of busy finches in the aviary just outside our window. Every morning they wake with renewed energy and enthusiasm to face the day.

Hexagon Stars

I found a dozen intricately hand-pieced miniature blocks,
probably from the 1950's or thereabouts.
Just now available in my Etsy shop!

Bus Ride

In going through some things this week, I found this picture I'd colored long, long ago.
It reminded me of early school days, and the first time I rode a bus.
I was still quietly sitting in my seat as the last child was dropped off because
I was unaware that I should come to the front as the bus neared my home.
The driver had not realized I was there and did not know where I lived.
Thankfully, it was a small community and when I told him my name
he guessed my parents, and knew where to take me.
We've laughed about it over the years.

Feeding the Birds

Love this painting! The subject matter, the brilliant colors, the skill and talent portrayed.
But most of all, it takes me back to happy times when my children were younger,
and we would stop by the bakery outlet, buy a couple loaves of bread,
then go to the park or the riverfront and feed the birds.

Though it's breezy outside
And wind carries a chill,
There blooms a beauty
On my windowsill.

Next Project

Pulled these colors from my stash...working on a new quilt.
