Cardinal Kindness

 Male Cardinal

After that big rain a couple days ago, the fallen sunflower seeds evidently sprouted. The male was really loving the tender green bits.  Before I grabbed the camera, I actually witnessed him feeding some to the female.

Strengthening Storm

Oh how it rained last night! As the sun set, the drizzle set in, and by 9:00 there was quite a down-pour! Around 10:30 there was a long, loud rumble of thunder that shook the window panes, and then more rain.  Every time I stirred during the night, I realized it was still coming down outside. And this morning there is water standing in the yard... soil is saturated!

Although it's a mess outside today, this is just what we need to have a beautiful Spring-time! It will encourage all those dormant seeds to do their thing, and it will coax those bulbs to make beautiful long shoots of green and eventually yield beautiful bouquets of color!

And thus is life...not always pretty or pleasant. But the messy parts can encourage growth and beauty. God, who gives us the promise of Spring, also gives hope that He can take our broken lives and make them trophies of grace. He brings beauty out of ashes. Joy out of heaviness. With Him all things are possible!

Show Us

 Show Us Thy Grace

Show us our need, O Lord;
How lost, how hopeless, how poor,
How sunk in sin our carnal hearts;
Show us how vain to change our sad condition,
Our best endeavor and our utmost arts;
Show us how weak we are, and how dependent,
How multiplied defeats our pride abase;
And then, O Lord -- lest we despair too wholly --
Show us Thy grace!

Show us Thy grace,
The great, the all-sufficient,
Infinite riches for our poverty,
Mercy of God for uttermost salvation,
Weapon that turns defeat to victory;
Gladness unspeakable and full of glory,
Beyond our needs, a vast unmeasured space.
Lord, as we never yet have seen or known it,
  Show us Thy grace!

These dainty little
are blooming now,
and brightening
a few spots in
my flower beds.

They come back
year after year
with their tiny
pure white bits
of Spring.

In researching,
I discovered they
are sometimes called
which better describes
the variety I have.

"Whatsoever things
are lovely..."

I knew we had a neighborhood rooster
who wants everyone out of bed promptly at 6:15 every morning!
But I was quite surprised when he paid a visit to my yard yesterday.
Watching his strut across the lawn, I've decided to refer to him as "Prancer".

Everyday Encouragement

Sometimes we are
called to attention by
a difficulty or trial,
or by just really
getting an eyeful
of our foolishness,
our weakness,
our need for God.

Along with my Bible,
the short chapters of
this book have been a
sweet encouragement
the past few days.

Squirrel Fact

Did you know?

"Female squirrels typically give birth to
two to eight offspring. Babies are blind
and totally dependent on their mothers
for two or three months. Mothers may
have several litters in a year, so most squirrel populations are robust."

And they love our pecan trees,
so we have no shortage of them!

Next Turn!

Today the Purple Finches took a turn at the feeder.
The Goldfinches came again, but they shared the fare.
Now it's time to re-fill the feeder! No problem :-)

Male "Purple" finches are a reddish color, with females a dull brownish gray.

Braving the Bully

All winter long we've had an over-protective Mockingbird
who will not share the territory or the 4 bird-feeders in our yard.
This morning I spied a couple Goldfinches savoring the sunflower seeds.
The Mockingbird chased them away, but they dared to return. Yeah for them!

Cape Honeysuckle

It was a beautiful day the 70's!
My husband was off work and we had some errands to run.
I had mentioned the other day that I'd like to stop by Lowe's and look at the plants;
he remembered :-) And we brought home these lovely orange blooms.
I will wait a couple weeks before planting them...
just in case it freezes one more time
 before Spring is truly here.

No Longer Dormant

Dormant -
not actively growing: in an inactive state,
when growth and development slow or cease

 Lively -
full or suggestive of  life or vital energy;
active, vigorous, or brisk:

"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,  which according to his abundant mercy
hath begotten us again unto a lively hope..."
I Peter 1:3

Just Perfect!

I do love flowers...especially the whole plant.
And especially after all the cold weather we've had.
My Sweetheart - Valentine - Hubby made a good choice...
it really "hit the spot" today! Thanks, Honey :-)

Curry Rice

12 oz. bacon, snipped into small pieces (1 inch or so)
1 large onion, chopped
1.5 - 2 tsp. curry powder
3 c. rice, measured dry, then cooked according to package directions
1/3 c. soy sauce

Cook bacon & onion in large non-stick skillet. (I use an electric skillet.)
Meanwhile, cook rice. (I use 1.5 c. water + 1/4 tsp. salt to every cup of rice.)

When onion is translucent, and bacon is crisped, add curry powder, and let this
cook a couple minutes. Then add the cooked rice and soy sauce.
Stir together and let it all heat through.

I learned this recipe from my daughter who learned from her father-in-law :-)

Oh brrrr! It's cold this morning! But homemade pancakes shared
with my son before he went to work did much to warm my heart :-)
