To Remember

Taking a quick bath...

I didn't plan the back-drop
of the pressure cooker at the edge.
But it put into perspective just how
this little guy is growing up, and I
know one day I'll be thankful to
look back at this picture and
remember how he used to
fit in the kitchen sink!

He loves it too!

We're enjoying watching our gardens grow, and are getting cucumbers, tomatoes, and squash. Yahoo!!!  Now I need to get some okra planted!

"Yahoo" is a interjection used to express exuberance or delight  :-)

Figs Eventually

It's still a very small fig tree...but today I counted 60 fruits maturing on it's little branches!
Last year, I think there were only 3!!!  I'm just a bit enthused about this figgy prospect :-)

My daughter's last day of this visit,
and she suggested we check out a
local botanical garden. It was a quick
walk-thru, but we did get some good
exercise, and we did see many pretty
plants and flowers. Also viewed the
nesting herons and cormorants, and
turtles basking in the sunshine.

And though the grandbaby was quite
a trooper, I believe he was glad
when it was time to go home!

Doesn't he just look

Mock Blackberry Cobbler

We picked blackberries today, but there weren't enough for my usual cobbler recipe.
They say "Necessity is the mother of invention" so this is how we improvised!

My daughter made the blackberry topping for the ice cream,
and I made the shortbread to imitate the crunchy, crusty cobbler we so love.

Blackberry Topping:
1 pint blackberries,    1 1/2 cups sugar,    1 teaspoon vanilla,    1 tablespoon corn starch,
2 tablespoons lemon juice

Mix altogether and cook on medium heat till it comes to a rolling boil. Let cool and serve.

3 sticks butter, softened        3 cups all purpose flour,    1 cup self-rising flour,    1/2 cup sugar

Mix all ingredients together and press into an air-bake jelly-roll pan. Bake @ 375 about 20 minutes or until light golden color. Remove from oven and immediately cut into small squares with pizza cutter.

A Daughter Gained

My son and daughter-in-law had a lovely wedding this past weekend...sweet and beautiful.
May God grant them many wonderful years together as they continue serving Him!

Why Random?

My gardening style and layout is... well, random :-)
In this picture, there are Turk's Cap , Wisteria, & Cannas in the background,
with Bougainvillea, and Black & Blue Salvia in the foreground.

Random, because I am always finding or receiving a new plant to add to the mix,
and because I'm just not a "manicured yard" type person. It's just not in me.
Sometimes I feel overwhelmed with the haphazardness of it all and would
like to just start over with a "clean slate".  But all in all, it does keep things
I N T E R E S T I N G.   And my husband reminds me that we do this
for the fun of it :-) Plus, it has cost us very little to do it this way.
Small investments here and there, and many hours of sweat.

Bubbling Busy Boy in Blue

When a grandbaby "sings"...well, there's not alot can top that to thrill a Nena's heart!
He hummed during diaper changes, naptime, playtime, and while exploring outside.
This lil' bubbling, busy boy in blue :-)

Pondering Eden

Now, I confess, my garden doesn't even come close
to what that first perfect Eden must have been like.
I imagine the plants were all bigger, more perfect,
more vibrant, more fragrant, pest and pesticide-free.
And I'm pretty sure there were less weeds!!!
I like to imagine what it would have been like...

God could have built a house for the first man and woman.
But He placed them in a beautiful garden.
I could ponder on that for a long time.

According To My Calculations

I believe I planted one bulb here three or four years ago.
It multiplied. (That's the wonderful thing about bulbs!)
Today I counted 45 buds on these few plants!
I'm so excited, and thankful for that supportive chair :-)

From a sweet daughter
for Mother's Day :-)

Looks like she

What a very nice
day brightener!

Busy Birds

Last week I put out four feeders of sugar
water. Today a family of Purple Finches were enjoying them, and also dining on the sunflower seeds at this feeder. Below them,
in the grass, were Doves, a Blue Jay, a Brown Thrush, Grackles, Sparrows, and a
male Cardinal taking turns foraging
for dropped seeds. There was also a
Chickadee momentarily and a small
tan bird I didn't recognize. And this is
just what I saw when I was watching!

Saturday I spied (for the first time ever)
a Rose-Breasted Grosbeak at our feeder!
I so wanted a picture, but it was not to be.

And there is a Robin's nest in the arbor!

The weather was mild enough I had the window up so I could hear all the bird songs.

An update
on the cabbages
that unexpectedly
grew from
the scraps
I added
to the garden
in March
as compost.

Here is my
previous picture
and I'm quite
pleased with
the progress.

It's A Mystery

Where did they come from? This bounty of yellow blooms...
I don't know their name, and don't remember planting them.
Yet these kinds of mysterious discoveries are nice.
