Remembering Childhood

Letters, Short Stories, Poems, Schoolwork, Cards, Memorabilia...
This is the smile my son had when looking at the things I'd saved from his childhood.
It was so fun to remember! I'm glad I kept them for him to have now, and to remember.
We even found his old basketball uniform, an "Indian" shirt he'd worn for Thanksgiving
when he was little, and some baby quilts. One quilt had blocks of gingham dogs
and calico cats appliqued with tiny stitches and then an embroidered inscription
to him on the back of it. And it's in "like new" condition because
I hadn't really used was hung on the wall of his nursery.

Answers To Yesterday's Clues

#1     Open Sleigh
(I hid the next clue in a small sleigh decor that was already on my shelf.)

#2     Mailbox
(It was clipped w/ a clothespin to the inside of the mailbox.)

#3     Pecan Picker Upper
(It's a metal tool we gather pecans with.)

#4     Patchwork Quilt
(This is a colorful quilt made of rectangles of bright fabric prints.)

#5     Wind Chimes
(I rolled the clue up and stuck it just inside a metal tube chime.)

#6     Fish Tank
(The fish are immigrants from the ocean originally. The clue was taped to the lower side of the tank.)

#7     Rocking Chair
(This was a child's rocking chair below the Christmas tree which had a star at the top.)

#8     Lemon Tree
(I put this clue in a small zip-lock bag in case of rain, and taped it to a branch of the lemon tree.)

#9     World Atlas
(It was slipped just below the atlas which was on a book shelf.)

#10   Gingerbread Man
(This was an ornament on the Christmas tree.)

#11    Air Conditioner
(I taped the clue to the outside top of the air conditioner.)

#12    Holly Tree
(There was a bag of socks and little things under the large Holly Tree.)

It was dark outside and misting rain. Everyone had flashlights and it was crazy fun.

Christmas Treasure Hunt

If you want to see grown children act like little children...well, do a treasure hunt :-)

Every year, I try to make clues to lead everyone on a crazy chase around the house,
inside and out, and ultimately to the hidden treasure. This year the "treasure" was a
variety of socks, and some little things like flashlights, chapstick, hand sanitizers...

When we have a treasure hunt, I like to promote teamwork. And I write the clues
so that they can be sung to a popular Christmas tune. This year the tune
was "O Christmas Tree" but starting at the chorus.

Everyone gets so excited, and there's always LOTS of laughter and silliness.
This year was no exception, and I wish I'd had every moment and every word
and move recorded...but we didn't get that. Nevertheless, it was a
"treasure" of time together. One of the highlights of the season!

Tomorrow I will give the answers to the clues.
I wonder if any one of you can guess?

Five of Eight

Wish all the children could have come...but this year it was only 5 of the 8.
And we understand. Things don't always work out the way we'd like, but
it's been a GREAT Christmas! Sweet fellowship, yummy foods, lots of laughs...

We watched old home fun! And we played Yahtzee, In A Pickle,
Fast Scrabble, Rack-O and more. And we had a Treasure Hunt!
(I'll post more about that later.)

Love these times with our children who are now our friends.

Christmas on Sunday

It was a different kind of day
because Christmas was on Sunday,
(and we still have family coming in tomorrow)
so we haven't actually opened our presents yet,
and it was so warm we ran the air conditioner today,
and I didn't cook a festive dinner since we will do that tomorrow.
But we did have plenty of yummy food and goodies, and played games
and there was lots of laughter and love around here, and it was a very good day.
This picture was taken at church this thankful for this bunch!
Wish the rest of them could have been there too, but they were in our thoughts.

Night Lights!

We took the grandbabies to see the Christmas lights...
I think it's safe to say they were awed :-)
And it was a beautiful night!!!

Whistle While You Work

Well, maybe we haven't been whistling,
but we have had Christmas music
while we prepare the house
and bake the goodies.

This girl,
sweet daughter o' mine,
came early so she could help
and she has been such
a wonderful blessing
and so, so, so much fun!

"...cheerfully together
we can tidy up the place..."

Christmas Decor Again!

We don't "do" Christmas as lavishly as most people.
Never have and probably never will. Simple is good.
But I do enjoy arranging these corner shelves
with a bit of holiday decor among our family pics.

Spot O' Chicken Soup

Chicken – Carrot Tortilla Soup

2 chicken breasts, 6 c. water, 1 tsp. salt

Boil till chicken is tender.

1 lb. carrots, sliced, 1 Tbs. butter, 1 Tbs. honey
1 tsp. salt, black pepper to taste, 2 c. water

Boil till carrots are tender.

Remove cooked chicken from broth and cut into chunks. Set aside.

Stack 4 burrito-size flour tortillas and slice into strips. (I cut w/ scissors.)

Add water to broth to make 2 quarts of liquid. Bring to a boil, and drop tortilla strips in.

Boil strips till liquid is cloudy and strips look more like noodles than tortillas.

Add 3 Tbs. chicken Orrington Farms Broth Base & Seasoning Chicken Flavored.

Return Chicken to broth. Add carrots.

I wrote down this recipe after I concocted it yesterday and realized
I want to make this again! Adjust the measurements to suit your taste!
